New to Injectables? Everything You Need to Know

Curious about Botox, fillers, and everything in between? Here's your honest, no-fluff guide to getting started with confidence.

A guide for first-timers.

The world of injectables can feel overwhelming at first — a sea of brand names, treatment types, and before-and-after photos. But at its core, it's simply about understanding a few key treatments, knowing what to expect, and finding the right practitioner to guide you.

What Are Injectables?

Injectables are non-surgical cosmetic treatments administered via fine needles or cannulas. They work beneath the skin's surface to smooth lines, restore lost volume, relax overactive muscles, and refresh your overall appearance — all with little to no downtime.

Unlike surgical procedures, most injectable treatments are temporary, reversible (in some cases), and can be customised to suit your individual goals and facial anatomy.

The Main Types

  • Relaxes targeted muscles to smooth dynamic wrinkles like frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines.

  • Restore or add volume to areas like the cheeks, lips, jawline, and under-eyes using hyaluronic acid gel.

  • Hydrate and improve skin quality from within, rather than changing facial structures. Think of this as a deep drink of water for your skin.

  • Stimulate your own collagen production overtime for gradual, natural looking rejuvenation that builds.

What to Expect: The Journey

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Avoid blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and alcohol for 24–48 hours before treatment to minimise bruising. Arrive with a clean face and no heavy makeup. Come with photos of looks you like and, just as importantly, looks you want to avoid.

THE CONSULTATION

A good practitioner will spend time assessing your anatomy, discussing your concerns, and explaining what's realistic. You should never feel rushed. This is the time to ask every question you have.

THE TREATMENT

Most injectable appointments take 15–60 minutes. A topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand. Most people describe the sensation as a mild pinch. Some areas, like the lips, are more sensitive than others.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER

Expect some redness, minor swelling, or small bumps at injection sites — this is completely normal and usually resolves within hours to a day. Bruising is possible but not inevitable.

THE RESULTS

Botox takes 5–14 days to settle fully. Fillers show immediately but settle over 2–4 weeks. Your practitioner may invite you for a review appointment at the 2-week mark for any minor adjustments.

Myths vs. Reality

Injectables carry a lot of misinformation. Here are the most common myths and the truth behind them.

MYTH

Botox will freeze your face and make you look expressionless.

REALITY

When placed correctly and conservatively, Botox softens lines while leaving natural expression fully intact. The "frozen" look is a result of overtreatment — not the product itself.

MYTH

Filler stretches your skin, so stopping will make you look worse.

REALITY

Hyaluronic acid fillers are broken down by your body over time. Small, well-placed amounts don't cause lasting skin changes. When filler dissolves or is removed, you return to your baseline.

MYTH

Injectables are only for older people trying to look younger.

REALITY

Many younger patients use injectables preventatively, or for structural enhancement like jawline definition and lip augmentation — not anti-ageing at all.

MYTH

All practitioners are the same — it's just about finding the cheapest price.

REALITY

This is perhaps the most dangerous myth. Injectable treatments require medical knowledge, an understanding of facial anatomy, and an aesthetic eye. The practitioner matters more than the product.

Choosing the Right Practitioner

Your results are only as good as the person holding the needle. This is not an area to compromise on based on price alone.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

  • A medically qualified professional — doctor, nurse prescriber, dentist, or pharmacist

  • A thorough, unhurried consultation before any treatment is administered

  • Transparent pricing with no pressure or upselling

  • A portfolio of real, consistent work — not just cherry-picked best results

  • Clear aftercare instructions and access to follow-up support

  • Access to emergency hyaluronidase (the filler dissolving enzyme) on site

First Treatment Recommendations

If you're completely new to injectables, most practitioners will suggest starting conservatively. Popular first-time treatments include:

  • Anti-wrinkle injections to the frown area (glabella) — quick, subtle, and a great introduction

  • A small amount of lip filler (0.5ml) to add natural definition without obvious augmentation

  • Skin boosters for overall skin quality improvement — virtually no structural change, just glow

Starting small builds trust with your practitioner and allows you to see how your body responds before committing to more significant treatments.
